Sunday School for All: Self-Control

Sunday School for All: Self-Control

What does Self-Control mean in the Bible? Selfcontrol is listed in the Bible as one of the Fruits of the Spirit – a sign that Christ is in us. If we let our desires lead our decisions, our lives (and our bodies) can quickly spin out of control. Selfcontrol is a discipline that God grows in us when we continually choose to die to our flesh and live in Him.

Meditate: 2 Timothy 1:7

Extended Reading: 2 Timothy 1:6-10

Anticipate:

  • What do you enjoy more: musicals or drama?
  • When is it difficult for you to maintain self-control?

Relate: Isabel and Sofia enjoy theater.  Throughout their elementary years, they have been in several musical productions and wanted to audition for a creative arts performing academy. …

Sunday School For All: Unpacking God’s Gifts – Gentleness

Sunday School For All: Unpacking God’s Gifts – Gentleness

This summer lesson outline is made available for you to work into your own home devotional life. As you read through the information below, please let Renae Belobraydich know if you have any questions, or if she can help make this transition easier for our Sunday School kiddos learning from home.

This Sunday’s Lesson: Gentleness

What does Gentleness mean in the Bible? Gentleness is the quality of being kind and careful. Your gentleness with a frightened stray dog will eventually convince her to let you feed and pet her. The noun gentleness is perfect for describing the way someone acts when they are soft and calm and sweet to other people.

Meditate: Matthew 11:28-29

Extended Reading: Matthew 11:25-30

Meditate: Lamentations 3:22-23

Extended Reading: Lamentations 3:21-26

Anticipate:

  • Think about the passage you just read.  How can something that never comes to an end be new every morning?

Relate: Growing up I sat with my parents in the adult church service.  Every Sunday morning my family woke up, got dressed in our Sunday best (for me it was a three-piece suit and clip on bow tie), grabbed our Bibles, and went to church.  Together we sat in the second row on the right side during the first service. …

Sunday School For All: Goodness

Sunday School For All: Goodness

What does the Bible mean by Goodness? Goodness is an action; it’s not something we do only for the sake of being virtuous. When we strive to be “good” only for our own benefit, it is not truly goodness that we possess.

Meditate: Galatians 6:9-10

Extended Reading: Galatians 6:1-10

Anticipate:

  • What makes you feel weary?
  • When is it difficult to “do good” for your family?

Relate: I read an article recently explaining why it’s more difficult to raise tweens than infants or toddlers.  They maintained that while infants or toddlers are incredibly needy, they also can be quick to reward you with smiles, coos, and sloppy kisses.  As children move into their preschool and early elementary years, they become less needy, and then somehow regress as hormones settle in. …

Extended Reading: Isaiah 63:7-19

  • What is your go-to strategy for handling sickness when it hits your house?
  • What was the kindest thing anyone has ever done for your family?

Relate: When a cold or flu hits you or one of your kids, it is only a matter of time before everyone in your family gets sick.  And you pray, on your knees, that by the time the illness reaches the last family member it does not loop back to the first person who got sick.

Unexpected Thoughtfulness: Unfortunately, as a parent there is no break when you are sick.  No one parents you when you are the sick one in the house.  I remember when our whole family was sick at the same time except for our oldest daughter Isabel. …

Meditate: Romans 8:25-26a

Extended Reading: Romans 8:18-27

Anticipate:

  • What situation has really tested your patience?
  • Many parents find it hard to be patient with their children.  How do you manage it?

Relate: It can be difficult to get your voice heard when you are the younger sibling.  Growing up I developed a stutter because I was so accustomed to people interrupting me.  Our son Z always has to wait for his sisters, especially when he wants to say something.  My girls talk!  There are a lot of words in our house.  Some days we hear so many words, we establish a word moratorium.  “You’ve run out of words for the day.  Tomorrow is coming soon.”  This is one of the byproducts of having four kids.…

  • What is troubling your heart?
  • What is causing fear in your life?
  • How has God’s peace given you comfort in a difficult time?

Relate: When I was seven, my family and I were told that I would need to have surgery.  I had a small lump in my neck and the specialist thought it might be lymphoma.  One night, while I was sleeping, I had a dream: a bright light appeared and I knew it was God.  He told me to trust in him.  A few weeks later, my grandparents were taking my family and I to the American Girl Doll Store.  My grandpa accidentally took a wrong turn on the way there. …

Anticipate:

  • What do you most enjoy doing?
  • What is the best trip you’ve ever been on?

Relate: Several years ago, we decided to plan a family vacation to Disney World.  To make the trip happen, our family made extreme changes.  We saved every penny we could find.  We stopped eating out.  We clipped coupons.  We cut back on date nights, movies, and desserts.  When you start cutting out ice cream, you know it’s serious!

Going All Out: Once enough money was saved, we went all out for the trip.  We stayed on Disney property, rented a limo to go from our house to the airport, made reservations to dine with character, lined up all the rides we wanted to go on, we even met personally with Peter Pan and Wendy. …
